I was wondering if anyone is familar with the la jolla area and if so where are there any decent spots to spearfish. I recently bought a polespear and I am ready to get a feel for this sport. I usuallly free dive near La Jolla Cove, ecological reserve and see plently of large sea bass and other small to medium size species. Does anyone have any tips about this area that would be helpful?

If you're up to a long swim, or you have access to a kayak, go to the outside of the kelp beds. The visibility is better there, and you'll have a better chance at some calico bass. Go on high tide when the fish are closer to the surface. You can also chum the water with some chopped up sardines or mackeral to bring them in closer. If you stay in shallow water, try breaking up some urchins. They tend to bring in the sheepshead.

La Jolla is in San Diego county in S. California. Nice place! Both rock and sandy bottoms with extensive kelp forrests.

La Jolla is a reserve so you will not be able to spear fish there.

Only part of La Jolla Cove is a marine reserve, no spearfishing there. Check with a local dive shop to show you what is off limits.

KELP BEDS LIKE SHARK HUNTER SAID. CHUM LINE WORKS GOOD I HEAR, ESPECIALY FOR YELLOWTAIL. YOU MAY HAVE TROUBLE OUT THERE WITH NO MORE THAN A "POLE SPEAR". I'M ASUMING YOU MEAN 3 PRONG BUT I'M NOT SURE. ANYWAYS, YOU'LD HAVE BETTER LUCK IN SHALLOWER WATER. I BELIEVE NORTH OF THE MAIN LIFEGUARD STATION IS LEGAL TO TAKE FISH BUT DOUBLE CHECK. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A STAE FISHING LISENCE AND KNOW THE LOCAL REGS. LOBSTER SEASION JUST OPENED Wink
